There is a large provincial style refectory/kitchen with dining table that accommodates 8 to10 people. It is fitted with dishwasher, washing machine, refrigerator, electric oven, gas hob and extractor, stainless steel sink and electric hostess trolley. There is a breakfast terrace and garden leading off the kitchen through French doors provides a superb sun soaked informal hideaway
There are two lounges – one with a massive fireplace and another with a TV with English television and DVD. There are 3 settees and 4 armchairs.
In Tocane (about 1km) there is a large supermarket. At Lisle, about 10 mins away, you will find a few small shops and bars and there is usually a Tuesday morning market selling a variety of fresh produce. Lisle also has a doctor and a pharmacy.
Riberac is about 15 mins away and has a lively square with many bars, cafes and restaurants. The Friday market is real fun – very large. Don’t forget to check out the stalls in the side streets as well. Excellent supermarket Leclerc in Riberac.
In La Tour Blanche you will find an excellent baker, butcher, general store, pharmacy, Post Office, tabac/bar and the Chez Fernand bar/restaurant (excellent fixed priced set menu Mon – Fri lunchtimes). Within easy reach there are a number of interesting places, which will delight you.
The town of Nontron is approx. 15 miles north and is set among attractive lakes that provide ideal picnic sites. It stands high up on a rock fortified by massive ramparts and has a picturesque 18th century chateau. This is a perfect place for children as it houses a lively museum of dolls, models, games and toys.

A short drive away there is the medieval town of Brantome where it is a delight to walk around the remarkable and ancient abbey founded by Charlemagne (742-814). With its soaring campanile this is one of the most elegant medieval and Renaissance buildings in the Dordogne, complete with caves used by the monks as kitchens and cellars. The town sits on a bend of the river Dronne and a stroll along the riverside is an unforgettable experience and there are also boat trips and canoes available. Loads of brilliant restaurants complete the experience – you will come back.
About 10 km down the river you come to the pretty village of Bourdeilles where there are two chateaux of different periods built on a fortified hill – a medieval fortress (13th – 14th century) and a Renaissance palace (16th) with a remarkable collection of furniture.
Aubeterre sur Dronne Its charming narrow streets wind through white stone houses and ancient buildings. Built in the shape of an amphitheatre this former stronghold is classified as one of France’s prettiest villages. The most outstanding and impressive monument in Aubeterre is the underground church of St John.
Not very far away is the town of Grottes de Villars and a short distance north of the town are the caves with some impressive stalactites and paintings more than 17,000 years old. Nearby is the Chateau de Puyguilhem in a village of the same name. It is a fascinating structure way out in the woods a Renaissance masterpiece that fell into disrepair but was carefully restored after WW2. It contains some suburb Aubasson tapestries and fine furniture and several fireplaces that are carved with exceptional beauty. And so it goes on – I just wish I had room to tell you more – come and find out for yourselves
There is a golf course at Pillac about 8 kms away. If you are a real professional you need to go to Perigueux about 15 kms away – a first class 18-hole course. There is also Tennis in town, with Watersports, Water park, Horse Riding, and Fishing nearby. There is also an excellent Information Folder in the house covering Safety Procedures, where to eat, where to shop, market days and places to visit. Great for: Walking holidays, Rural/countryside pursuits, Cycling holidays or a winter sun break
How to get there
Driving from Calais is 760kms and takes about 8 hours. (via Boulogne-Rouen-Le Mans- Poitiers- Angouleme). There are a number of alternative ferry companies, Sea France are very competitive. If you are prepared for a longer drive you can use Norfolk line to Dunkirk instead of Calais. This is about 45 kms further but you can detour through Paris if the notion takes you.
By air to Bergerac, Brive, Limoges or Angouleme, we suggest Ryanair and they are cheap if you book ahead and other options are Easy jet to Bordeaux or Flybe to Bergerac.
Rentals cars are available from a large number of companies at Bergerac airport. You can book Hertz through Ryanair and their rates are competitive. Europcar and Avis are also available.
